Freelance developer or agency: which one are you actually buying?

Both can ship working software. The difference is who you talk to, and how much of your budget pays for coordination.

The structural difference

With many agencies you buy a managed outcome. A project manager is your contact. The people writing the code are behind that person. With a freelance developer, or a founder-led studio, you buy access to the person doing the work.

Freelance or founder-led Typical agency
Who you talk to The developer A project or account manager
What the fee includes Mostly the work PM time, sales, margin
How fast it starts Often days after scope Often weeks of staffing
Depth One person’s skills, plus named specialists A bench, if they actually staff it
If someone is unavailable You planned for one person They may reassign

Where freelance wins

Cost, when you do not need a coordinator. Speed of answers, because the person who knows the code is the person you asked. Scope changes that do not require a change-request ritual.

That is how TechDriven Solutions is set up: one senior developer, and a specialist only when the project needs a skill that is not already covered. You are told before that happens. It is not a claim of a large team.

Where an agency wins

A project that truly needs design, several platforms, and QA at the same time, every week, for months. Procurement rules that require a vendor of a certain size or certification. A need for someone else to be swapped in if a named person leaves.

If you need that redundancy, pay for it. Do not hire one developer and expect agency cover.

How to choose

Write down the skills the next three months actually require. If the list is “backend and a UI, with a designer for two weeks,” a founder-led engagement fits. If the list is four disciplines in parallel, an agency — or a freelance lead plus specialists you can name — is the honest shape.
